NCTI makes a group of high quality and globally known Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHC). LOHCs are chemical compounds that can reversibly store and release hydrogen through a catalytic process. These carriers typically consist of hydrogen-rich organic compounds.
The basic principle of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers is the application of an organic molecule that has the ability to chemically bind hydrogen to its structure. Thus, unsaturated hydrocarbons that have a high density of double bonds are in the focus of interest.
Benzyltoluene (BT)
BT is widely know and generally accepted as the best option for liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC). BT has several benefits as LOHC material, including:
- Safety - BT is non-explosive, flame retardant, and has a relatively low hazard potential. It's also considered to be safer to transport than diesel, with similar but less dangerous conditions.
- Storage - BT can store hydrogen at ambient conditions without the need for pressurized or cryogenic vessels. It also has a competitive volumetric storage density.
- Handling - BT has low viscosity, which makes it easier to handle in colder conditions. It's also stable and well-suited for handling hydrogen in urban environments and ports.
- Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation - BT performs well in hydrogenation and dehydrogenation cycles. The BT-based LOHC system also has a faster hydrogen release rate and lower hydrogen release enthalpy than dibenzyltoluene-based systems.
Diphenylmethane (DPM)
DPM DPM is a white solid with the formula (C₆H₅)₂CH₂, which is methane with two hydrogen atoms replaced by two phenyl groups. It can be mixed with other compounds to create liquid-phase hydrogen storage materials.
With its high flash and low viscosity, DPM has a lot in common the BT as a LOHC for the storage and transportation of hydrogen.
Market LOHC Comparison:
BT is widely accepted as the best option for LOHC. Like Toluene it also has a low melting point meaning there is no need for specialized heat tracing or heated tanks. However, due to its high flash point, BT is not placarded like Toluene making easier shipping and regulations. BT LOHC can ship in the same existing cargo and infrastructure as diesel fuel.
